How to Make A Stress-Free Transition from Summer to Fall
As the summer comes to a close, it’s hard not to wonder how we’ll successfully transition from a season of summer cookouts and beach days, to what may seem like an unmanageable schedule that now involves back to school anything, and that dreaded 9-5... bye Summer Fridays!
To help you navigate this new, not-so-relaxed lifestyle, so you leave the stress at the door and bring in the zen, here are some tips to get you through the season:
1. Get Enough Zz’s
Sleep is at the top of our list. The time you go to bed the night before dictates how your following day will go. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep each day or enough sleep that you wake up feeling refreshed. Getting good rest can help you better manage stress as it arises, as well as help regulate your metabolism and increase concentration. Make sure your bedroom is dark, quiet and relaxing and ditch the electronics at least an hour before bedtime. Diffusing essential oils like Lavender or Sweet Orange before bed will help ease busy minds!
2. Anticipate and Address Anxiety
Getting back into the groove of a more regular, 9-5 schedule can be stressful. To help ease the anxiety and nerves, address it head on. Talk with a friend or family member about any fears or anxiety you may have and come up with solutions on how you can overcome them.
If you have kids, ask them to share any back to school fears they may be experiencing. Talking to your kids about current and future stressors can ease the transition and better prepare them for what is to come. Keep a light-hearted attitude and get them excited about the new school year- your kids will pick up on your positivity and their nervous energy will turn into excitement!
3. Plan ahead for the week
Your time is precious! Creating a weekly and monthly schedule will be a life saver for you by establishing a routine that is tailored to you and your lifestyle. Setting both short-term and long-term goals is proactive and effective time management. You can use a white board, free printable weekly planner or a pocket planner to stay stress-free by laying out a schedule that works for you. If you have kids, color coordinate and allow them to participate by asking them what fun activities they would like to do. Don’t forget one-on-one time!
4. Don’t Skimp on the Fruits and Veggies
Swap out the summer junk food and sugary cocktails for more wholesome, nutrient-dense foods. Prepare healthy snacks and meals the night before and aim for at least 5 servings of fruit and vegetables a day.
In a time crunch? Opt for an easy-to-make breakfast smoothie like one of these. If you have kids, keep it colorful and incorporate what is in season i.e. sweet potato, butternut squash, apples and carrots.
