DIY Homemade Bath Bombs With Essential Oil Recipes

Have you ever used a bath bomb before? If you are a fan of luxurious baths, then you have to try them! These little, fizzy balls of joy for bath time fun are easy to make yourself. Do-it-yourself bath bombs are much less expensive than are the ones you find in the stores. Plus, with the right ingredients, they can turn your bath into a hydrating and skin-soothing experience. You can even make your own homemade bath bombs that are tailored to meet your own specific therapeutic and skin-healing desires.

Essential oils are a wonderful way to add aromatherapy to your daily bath ritual. Combining essential oils with your bath bombs will provide a therapeutic sensory experience, whether you are looking to relax or to energize your senses. Here are all the steps to creating your own DIY homemade bath bomb recipes with essential oils:

Different Essential Oils Invoke Different Feelings

When deciding which essential oils to use, think about the kind of feeling you want to invoke during your time in the bath. If you want to relax after a long and hard day of work, look for an essential oil that is soothing, such as bergamot — a relaxing, citrusy smell that reminds some people of fresh scented laundry. Lavender oil is great for those who suffer from stress-related insomnia, and it is an especially nice and calming scent to use in the bath right before bed. Lavender is known for its incredible relaxing effect.

If you want to take a bath that is energizing and invigorating, try peppermint essential oil: It refreshes and awakens your senses with its bright, minty scent. Other invigorating oils can be found in the citrus family, oils such as sweet orange, lemon, grapefruit, lime, or tangerine.

DIY bath bombs can be terrific gifts that are fairly inexpensive and especially impressive when you wrap them up nicely in colored cellophane and ribbon inside a decorative box. However, when making them as gifts, take care to think about which kinds of essential oils would benefit your friend, family member, or loved one for whom you are making them. The type of bath bomb you want to create should coincide with the type of feeling you want to invoke — happiness, health, relaxation, playfulness, desire, and so on.

Gather Your Ingredients

In order to make a DIY bath bomb, there is a small list of ingredients you need to obtain. You can acquire most of these from a natural food grocery store, a big box store, or a health food emporium. Even some craft stores now carry the ingredients and molds you need to make different shaped spa treats and goodies. Ordering online is also a relatively easy way to obtain some of the harder-to-locate ingredients, such as food-grade citric acid and aromatherapeutic essential oils. Here are all the ingredients you will need to make the perfect bath bomb:

  • Baking Soda
  • Corn Starch
  • Citric Acid
  • Epsom Salt
  • Olive Oil
  • Water
  • Essential Oil(s)
  • Food Coloring
  • Plastic Molds (preferably a tray that holds round molds)

Finally, you’ll need to have your measuring cups and measuring spoons on hand. You can easily double or triple this recipe (some people like to use a couple of bath bombs before leaving their luxury bath). Remember, too, you can even dye the mixture to correspond with certain essential oils, such as yellow for lemon, pink for peppermint, and purple for beautiful lavender. Some craft stores will even carry molds in seasonal shapes, such as trees for holiday fun, or chicks and bunnies for Easter celebrations. You can get as creative as you want with your own homemade bath bombs — because it all has to do with how you want to indulge yourself in your own private at-home spa.

Recipe to Make 4 Bath Bombs

First, mix your dry ingredients together

To make 4 bath bombs that weigh about 3 ounces each, you need to first mix all your dry ingredients together in one large bowl.

You need:

  1. 1 cup of baking soda
  2. 1/2 cup citric acid
  3. 1/2 cup Epsom salts
  4. 1/2 cup cornstarch.

Mix all 4 ingredients thoroughly with a wooden spoon or whisk together until well blended and then set the bowl aside, so you can get all your wet ingredients together.

Second, combine your wet ingredients separately

You Need:

  1. 1 tsp. Water
  2. 1 tsp. Olive oil
  3. 2 drops of food coloring
  4. 2 tsp. of essential oil(s)

Combine all of your wet ingredients. It’s perhaps best to use only 1 kind of essential oil or to use 2 different kinds that go well together (such as sweet orange and cinnamon for an invigorating blend), using 1 tsp. of each individual oil. However, some people prefer to use 3 different kinds in order to hit all 3 different notes (top, middle, and base) — it’s really up to you. Get creative with your essential oils to make each type of bath bomb a completely different experience.

Third, mix your dry and wet ingredients

Take your liquid ingredients and pour them into the large bowl that contains your dry ingredients. With a wooden spoon, stir all your ingredients together. Stir until your mixture has a consistency like that of wet sand, a consistency that can be molded and separated into large lumps. This stuff is actually very fun to play with!

Fourth, pack the mixture into round plastic molds

Working quickly, so the mixture doesn't dry out, pack it tightly into the molds. Then, let the molds set for 5-10 minutes. Remove the bath bombs gently from the molds and let them air dry on a piece of parchment paper on a baker’s drying rack. Leave them for a full 24 hours before you try to use one in the bath or try to wrap them up as gifts. It’s really that easy! As a safety caution, keep them out of reach of pets or small children, who may mistake their pleasant scents for food or candy.

Once you get started making your own essential oil bath bombs, you are going to want to repeat the process often, so you always have your own amazing spa goodies to use at any time.
