Hyaluronic Acid Benefits All Skin Types---Here’s Why

Hyaluronic Acid Benefits All Skin Types---Here’s Why

I’ve been seeing estheticians for ten years. (Thanks, acne!) I have tried it all from chemical peels to blue light therapy to microdermabrasion. Spoiler alert: this can result in dry skin. And hyaluronic acid has definitely become my favorite moisturizer to use after intense treatment. Traditional moisturizers can irritate your newly revealed skin. However, hyaluronic acid is not a one-trick pony! It has a ton of incredible benefits for all skin types. Keep scrolling if you want the skinny on hyaluronic acid.

What Is Hyaluronic Acid

At its core, hyaluronic acid gives your skin the ability to hold onto water and to prevent moisture from evaporating into the air. From a nerdy, scientific view, hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring glycosaminoglycan, a vital component in the matrix of your skin. Linking to collagen on one side and holding onto the water on the other; grants HA a powerful water-holding ability. This is what imbues skin with a dewy, glass skin glow.

And just in case you’re still befuddled by the name-- hyaluronic acid--it’s not an acid in the traditional sense of the word; meaning to exfoliate dead skin cells away. Instead, it provides lubrication to certain parts of the body---including your skin.

Skin Protecting Benefits

But in the world of skincare, hyaluronic acid would be classified as a humectant. And it’s essentially another name for a water-loving ingredient. Skincare brands typically put a humectant in their products to boost the hydration of their products.

A humectant can be either natural or synthetic. The synthetic type does the job of moisturizing skin, but that’s pretty much it. A natural humectant is a hydration booster, but it also repairs your skin barrier. Hyaluronic acid is a natural humectant, and it does an excellent job of protecting and repairing your skin barrier. In one study, hyaluronic acid has been shown to be effective at skin barrier repair for people affected by dermatitis.

Anti-Aging Benefits

Hyaluronic acid is present in practically every aspect of the body from your brain to your connective tissue. But skin has the lion’s share with fifty percent of total HA. As we get older, our production of hyaluronic acid begins to slowly diminish.

And this inevitable slow-down is made worse by UV light, as sun damage degrades hyaluronic acid. This decrease in hyaluronic acid is a direct cause of wrinkles. However, applying HA on the skin directly can result in increased skin elasticity, reduced depth of wrinkles, and a significant boost in hydration after eight weeks.

Using HA For Normal / Dry / Sensitive Skin

There are a ton of skincare products on the market with hyaluronic acid. The question is: which one do you pick?  If you live a busy on-the-go lifestyle, a moisturizer with HA could be a good fit for you. It’s quick and easy to use. But if you want serious results, a dedicated hyaluronic acid serum is the way to go.

It plays well with other active ingredients like retinol and AHAs. And it calms the skin while providing a layer of antioxidant protection. Don’t forget about the mind-boggling boost in hydration.

Now that we nailed down what type of HA might fit you and your skin needs, let’s talk about the best way to apply hyaluronic acid. The most effective way to apply HA is right before your moisturizer twice a day. You want to make sure that your skin is lightly moist before application.

Hyaluronic acid is a moisture magnet and it requires water to draw it into the skin. If your face is bone dry, the hyaluronic acid will draw the water from within your skin to the surface. You’ll actually end up drying your skin out. This method of application is ideal for most skin types except for acne-prone/ combination skin.

Pro tip: Use a water mist to wet your skin before applying a hyaluronic acid serum.

Using HA For Acne-Prone/ Combination Skin

If your skin is acne-prone or combination, you’re always tempted to ditch moisturizer. Especially if you get a shiny forehead by mid-afternoon, added hydration just sounds like an oily mess. And you may even over-exfoliate to fight any active breakouts, which can result in a damaged skin barrier. (Side note: I definitely have done this.)

Signs of an impaired skin barrier are redness, flakiness, dryness, tightness, increased breakouts, burning sensation, and rough skin. Avoid this disastrous outcome and moisturize! A hyaluronic acid serum provides ultra-lightweight oil-free hydration while avoiding any sort of greasiness on the skin. Apply on moist skin and you’re done!
